After decades in leadership, I’ve noticed that often what you become most passionate about are the things you realize you didn’t do quite right yourself.

Thinking back on the first couple of decades of my leadership career, I was always trying to fix myself. I had trouble with time management, so I’d take every course and read every book on the skill that I came across. I was always focused on those things that I thought were keeping me from becoming the complete leader.

But eventually I realized I was doing it all wrong.

How did your leadership career begin?

Price was surrounded by entrepreneurs throughout childhood, he says: he joined his father in the family business and learned early on that entrepreneurship isn’t just about earning money, but also building strong relationships with clients and employees. Today, he explains, his primary motive is to help business leaders understand that money is best earned by embodying a set of values, being noble, and serving a purpose.

Skip Hall, an old friend and NCAA football coach, once told me that on average players only get 11 to 20 minutes of play per game. That’s it! They’ll commit 20 hours of practice and preparation per week just for this short amount of time on the field. For a successful team, that time can pay off in wins and championships. However, if your team isn’t versed in the skills needed for successful teamwork—communication, goal orientation, relationship building—they won’t be winning many games.
